Where will they be going? On each New Year’s Day,
that question is answered (or at least in part). After the decorations are
put away and the family has been gathered together, the box of flashcards
is opened.
Each
flashcard holds information about one of the states within America.
A random drawing from the stack will determine the destination for that
year’s family vacation. In each subsequent year, a different
flashcard (thus state) will be chosen. Therefore, in fifty years they will
have traveled and visited every state in the country. While
separately they have visited the majority of the states, the idea of this
drawing is for them to experience, together, the wonders of the nation.
They
will visit the state picked each New Year’s Day within the following
twelve months. For a minimum of four days, they will explore it as a
family to learn about its culture, climate, and people. While they may go
to states where they want to visit family and friends, they will not
include these days as part of their travels.
When
do they go? Where will they visit? What will they do?
They will let the state determine the answers to these questions.
For each state boosts a site, event or activity that must be encountered;
something that is spectacular, magical, or a once in a lifetime
experience. These are the things that they will discover.
After
each state’s flashcard is drawn, the determination of when, where and
what to do may come immediately or may take research. Either way,
